On the occasion of his birthday

Gabriel Byrne

With today being Gabriel Byrne’s birthday, while we wait for the New York City resident’s hit series Quirke to reach American shores, what better time to revisit Into the West, one of his best films.

First, you have the adventure and the humor and the emotion of the two young motherless boys and their unwitting pilgrimage with the magnificent white horse, Tír na nÓg.  Second, you have Byrne’s memorable work as the bereft traveler Papa Reilly.  And if all that were not enough, this 1992 release directed by Mike Newell is wall-to-wall with a slew of Irish actors (Colm Meaney, John Kavanagh, Brendan Gleeson, Jim Norton, and the late David Kelly).  Here are Part 1 and Part 2 of the making-of documentary .
