Sudocrem in Sunnyside

Sudocrem

On a recent run out to the Irish Butcher Block grocery store in Sunnyside, it was gratifying to see that the wonder cream for burns and nappy rash, invented by one of my grandad’s brothers a long time ago, is still in demand and available in the US.

After stocking up on brown bread, jam, crisps, chocolates and newspapers, I saw this work of art by James Ransome on the number 7 train back into the city:

I did a doubletake, asking myself “Wait, are those sheep?” and indeed, upon closer inspection, there they are!

Immediately, I jumped to the conclusion that the left side of the picture was set in Ireland, a reflection of the large pockets of Irish people living along the number 7 line, but no, that’s not quite right.   Here’s the story of this piece of art, and information on where you can buy your own copy, courtesy of the New York Transit Museum store.
